Subject: Our relationship

Steve, some of your correspondence reads as if you believe we had a relationship beyond that which we have.  I don’t know what Dick told you, but here is how I view it.Back when Dick was an elected official, in 1993 and 1997, I was paid by the Senate Republican Majority (SRM) to do work for him.  I helped him a bit in 1996, when he ran for the U.S. Senate, but left early in the campaign because I could clearly see that he wasn’t going to be able to raise the money to make a credible run.  I was also asked, by the SRM, to try to talk him into dropping his U.S. Senate run, as it would damage his State Senate re-election race the following year.  I failed in this.Dick and I talked again in 2007, when he raised the possibility of resuscitating his political career.  At some point during this period, Dick mentioned that he had a web design business with you and asked that I introduce the two of you to my clients in the 24th district, which I did.  The following year, I agreed to help Dick recapture some of his lost limelight.  I normally get paid for this kind of thing, but I agreed to help him for old times’ sake.  Dick’s profile began to rise to the point where he was again a recognized figure in New Jersey Republican circles.  Mission accomplished.Late in 2009, NJCRLC was formed to support traditional marriage in New Jersey — which was under threat by a lame duck session of the Legislature.  I agreed to serve as its volunteer executive director.  NJCRLC was successful.  NJCRLC could have closed after that success, but other issues appeared so that Dick, a member of the Board and a Trustee of the organization, strongly argued that NJCRLC pay your business to design a website for the organization. That is my relationship with Dick and with you.  Socially, I believe I have been out with you on one occasion, when Dick talked me into going to Hoboken with a group of people to see his girlfriend do a stand-up comedy routine.  I think it cost me something in the neighborhood of $100.I bring this up, because you made a comment about me not “taking care” of you.  I don’t know what you were told, but I don’t believe we have that kind of relationship.
